Abstract
This work presents a historical review of the development of the He-Ne laser, which is commonly used in the academic life of undergraduate students. It reflects how a theoretical idea derived from basic science research (the first maser) evolved into a device that completely changed science and technology. It is emphasized that basic science cannot advance without the support of engineering, just as technology cannot be created without basic science.
