Abstract
The conception of building codes for earthquake resistant structures is very complex due to the lack of opportunities to assess its accuracy. High intensity earthquakes are not common and the possibilities to observe the behavior of the structures under its effects are limited. Building codes must introduce the latest and most advanced knowledge to reduce earthquake induced damage and their effects. However, new theories need empirical validation to be accepted and proved, and without it, it may be difficult to introduce them into the building codes. Some of the challenges related with these issues are presented on this paper.
