Abstract
Imagine an intense earthquake strikes your city. While ordinary buildings (offices, commercial stores, or residences) might suffer damage, there are others that must absolutely continue functioning: hospitals treating the injured, fire stations responding to emergencies, schools serving as temporary shelters, and transportation stations for evacuating people. These essential or important buildings must remain operational when they are needed most. That's why when structural engineers design them, they must follow much stricter standards than those used for ordinary construction.
