Resumen
Los plásticos, son productos orgánicos. Desde sus inicios, a nivel global se han producido alrededor de 9200 millones de toneladas (Mt) de plástico, y la producción anual se sostiene en aproximadamente 400 Mt, de lo cual solamente el 8% es reciclado. El problema de la basura plástica es que se fragmenta en partículas más pequeñas que se conocen como micro y nano plásticos. Por su naturaleza, los plásticos y micro plásticos (MPs) generan una huella ambiental que se relaciona fuertemente con efectos negativos en la salud humana, disminución de la calidad de los ecosistemas y agotamiento de recursos. En la actualidad afortunadamente, existen investigaciones encaminadas a mejorar las estrategias de degradación de plásticos con el propósito de evitar la generación subproductos contaminantes adicionales y disminuir el efecto ambiental.
